Meet Bernard

Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. took office on December 1, 2008 to fulfill a partial two-year term for the late Mayor Bryan Baptiste. He has spent his adult life championing for the rights and betterment of individuals, families and communities throughout Kauaʻi, leading to his re-election in 2010 and 2014.

Mayor Carvalho has been employed by the County of Kauaʻi since 1985. In 2002, he was appointed by Mayor Baptiste as the Director of the Offices of Community Assistance, which included the Transportation, Recreation, Elderly Affairs and Housing Divisions. In 2007, he was tapped by Mayor Baptiste to set up and lead the new Department of Parks and Recreation as Director.

A Kauaʻi native, Mayor Carvalho was born to Bernard Carvalho Sr. and Priscilla Hanohano. He graduated from Kapaʻa High School in 1979 and attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa on a full-ride athletic scholarship for football. He graduated from UH in 1983 with a degree in communications and public relations and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins.

Returning to Kauaʻi in 1985, Mayor Carvalho married Regina "Gina" Godinez of Oceanside, California. Gina is a registered nurse at Wilcox Hospital. They have three children: Bronson (St. Louis High School/Alcorn State University graduate), Brennen (Kamehameha Schools/Portland State University graduate) and Brittney (Kapaʻa High School/Kauaʻi Community College graduate). They also have two grandchildren: Welina and Nahoa.

Mayor Carvalho has been active with many community organizations and efforts, including:

  • State Fatherhood Commission (2006-Present)
  • St. Catherine's Church member of Pastoral Council and participates in the music ministry program
  • Kawaihau District Leadership Coalition (anti-drug effort) (mid-1990s)
  • Keanuenue Connection (anti-drug effort) (mid-1990s)
  • Hale Hoʻomalu (Child and Family Service), former Board member
  • Former HMSA "E Ola Pono" awardee for community service
  • Recipient of the Interfaith Council Eastside Family of the Year award in 1996
  • Kapaʻa High School Parent Teacher Student Association President
  • Kamehameha Schools Association of Kauaʻi President
  • St. Catherine’s School Parent Teacher Guild President
